A “Fast Forward” workshop was presented at Oakton Community College on December 5, 2011. RSVP Program Coordinator for HandsOn Suburban Chicago, Linda McLaughlin, partnered with Advocate Lutheran General Hospital’s Volunteer Manager, Magda Scanlon to speak to attendees in a current career transition about the importance of volunteer work while in a job search.
Workshop topics covered:
- Why Volunteer – How does volunteering help in your job search and life.
- Where to Volunteer – How to be strategic about volunteer choices that will align your skills and passions with volunteer opportunities.
- When to Volunteer – What is the right level of time to commit to volunteering while reserving time to look for a job.
- How Employers perceived volunteering – How to reflect volunteer activity on a resume that will appeal as a job candidate.
The workshop stressed the importance of volunteer work while in a job search in today’s environment in order to stay engaged in a workplace environment, keep skills active, provide an opportunity for new networking opportunities, provide a sense of accomplishment and self-worth, provide opportunity to help others, and provide an activity that can be shown on a resume.
