During the 22nd annual Paint-a-thon this Saturday, local businesses showed their support and their people power, making a very visible difference in their community. While the Valspar paint company donated all of the paint and materials needed for the event to occur, corporate groups turned out in big numbers, bringing employees closer to one another and to their community.

Katie Bylah, VP of Finance at Pepsiamericas, was the leader of a group of 35 Pepsi employees that painted the inside of the Clearbrook assisted-living facility. She said it was a great way for the employees of international company to get in touch with their local community.

“With an organization of our size we just feel like there’s so many of us that want to do things for the community, because really the community does so much for us,” she said.

Another corporate group featured 20 Motorola employees, led by team leader and engineering manager at Motorola, Chris Morton. He said that while the Paint-a-thon started as a team building exercise nine years ago, it has developed into an annual effort to give back to the community.

“I think the advantage is it’s not only an opportunity for people to work together that don’t typically work together during the day, it’s also an opportunity to give back to the community,” he said.

While in recent years there had been as many as seven Motorola groups involved in the Paint-a-thon, Morton said downsizing has lowered the number down to four groups of 20 people. That’s still four houses that will be painted by the end of the day, Morton said.

Homeowners involved in the Paint-a-thon were very grateful for the volunteer’s efforts. Joanne Piazza, who lives in the house painted by Morton and his crew, said she thought it was wonderful that Motorola and other companies were supporting their employees’ volunteer efforts.

“I’m very grateful for this day and that God shined upon us and let us have a wonderful day to paint,” Paizza said.
